My intention is to outline the differences and commonalities between Homeopathy and Naturopathy. Despite being unique natural healing methods, they also have numerous similarities.
First, how are they similar?
Both operate from a belief in an innate healing capacity of the body.
Both are safe and effective.
Both are lifetime studies.
Both view you as a whole person, rather than separate parts or diagnoses.
Both seek to address the root causes of illness and imbalance.
Both seek to "do no harm" according to the Hippocratic Oath.
They were both developed by medical doctors who were dissatisfied with the therapeutics of their times in the 1700s and 1800s. (Samuel Hahnemann - Homeopathy; Benedict Lust - Naturopathy)
What sets Naturopathic Medicine apart from Homeopathic Medicine?
Naturopaths hold a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from a 4-year Naturopathic Medical school, while Homeopaths receive various forms of training in Homeopathy. Naturopaths and other health professionals who have studied Homeopathy can incorporate it into their practice. While most Naturopaths recommend Homeopathic remedies, not all possess the expertise for Constitutional Homeopathy (refer to the "About Homeopathy" page on this website for more details).
Homeopathy can be studied by anyone. 'Lay' Homeopaths are individuals who learn to use Homeopathy for themselves and their families, typically for acute or first aid purposes.
Naturopaths employ a range of natural treatments such as herbs, nutraceuticals, and nutrition. For more information, visit this link: https://naturopathic.org/. Homeopaths primarily rely on Homeopathic medicine as their main therapeutic approach.
Homeopathy is a specialized form of natural medicine that utilizes Homeopathic remedies. To become proficient in prescribing, one must be familiar with thousands of remedies. Homeopathy is an energetic healing modality that operates on subtle levels of the body, yet it is potent in promoting healing across physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.
Homeopaths conduct thorough and detailed assessments to identify the appropriate remedy. While a diagnosis is not always necessary for effective treatment, it can be beneficial. In licensed states, Naturopaths can diagnose and treat illnesses and even serve as primary care providers. There are no licensure requirements for Homeopaths.
I trust this explanation clarifies the similarities and distinctions between Naturopathy and Homeopathy. I am a trained Naturopath but have specialized in Homeopathy throughout my 36-year career.
